Sarabjit Singh: Son of Indira Gandhi’s Assassin Running for Lok Sabha in Faridkot

Indira Gandhi, the then-prime minister, was killed by her bodyguards Beant Singh and Sawant Singh riddling her with bullets on October 31, 1984.

Now, Sarabjit Singh, son of the assassin Beant Singh, is all set to contest in the upcoming Lok Sabha Election 2024 from Punjab’s Faridkot constituency.

The 45-year-old said many people from Faridkot have asked him to take part in the electoral race, adding that he will be in the fray independently. Gandhi was killed by Beant Singh at her residence on Safdarjung Road, New Delhi, allegedly in revenge for Operation Blue Star, which was an Indian Armed operation in 1984 to remove Sikh separatists from the Golden Temple.

Who Is Sarabjit Singh?

A class 12 dropout, Sarabjit Singh, had unsuccessfully fought the 2004 Lok Sabha polls from Bathinda seat and had polled 1.13 lakh votes. He had also unsuccessfully contested the 2007 Punjab assembly polls from Bhadaur seat in Barnala.

Singh had again tried his luck in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls from Fatehgarh Sahib seat but lost again. His mother Bimal Kaur was elected an MP from Ropar seat in 1989. Polling for 13 Lok Sabha seats in Punjab will be held on June 1. In 2019, he was the Bahujan Samaj Party candidate. In 2014, Sarabjit Singh Khalsa had declared assets to the tune of Rs 3.5 crore in the election affidavit. His mother, Bimal Kaur, and his grandfather, Sucha Singh, became MPs from Ropar and Bathinda, respectively, in 1989.

The AAP has fielded actor Karamjit Anmol from Faridkot Lok Sabha seat while the BJP has named singer Hans Raj Hans for the polls. The Faridkot seat is currently represented by Congress MP Mohammad Sadique.

Elections for the 543 Lok Sabha seats will be held between April 19 and June 1 in seven phases. The counting of votes for the Lok Sabha Polls will be held on June 4. The Lok Sabha Election 2024 in Punjab is scheduled to take place on June 1 in a single phase to elect 13 members to the 18th Lok Sabha.
