The temple of Bhavishya Badri is located about 17 Kms from Joshimath to the east toward Lata (a village on roadside) in the area of Subhai village. It has an altitude of 2744 metres above sea level and is located within dense forest. There is a beautiful water spring in Bhavishya Badri and the place has many Cedar trees.

According to Hindu legend at the onset of kalyug, the ever-withering arm of the Narasingha idol at Joshimath will finally fall off and the mountains of Nar and Narain will collapse making the present shrine of Lord Badrinath inaccessible. Thereafter Lord Badrinath will be worshipped at Bhavishya Badri. After Vishnu, in his incarnation as Kalki, destroys the world bringing kalyug to an end satyug will begin again and Badrinath Dham will be reestablished at Bhavishya Badri.

As per the priest serving in the temple since last forty years the idol was just a plain Shila where not even a garland could be placed but during these 40 years the idol has developed its shape and now the Lord Badrinath is visible in its form. The Shila was accidently discovered when cow of one of the herder used to pour its milk over the shila making villager wonder why it has been doing so. Lately they started worshipping this shila as Bhavisya Badri.
