South Tripura: A 26-year-old man, Badal Tripura, from the Kaladepa area of South Tripura’s Sabroom, died at his residence after being allegedly tortured while in police custody. The incident has led to widespread anger and protests, with locals demanding justice and accountability.
Badal Tripura was arrested on October 13, after local residents caught him allegedly stealing rubber sheets from a godown. He was handed over to the police after being beaten by locals. According to reports, he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of arrest and was released the following day, on October 14. However, just two days after his release, Badal was found dead at his home on October 16.
Allegations of Torture and Detentions
The family of the deceased has alleged that Badal’s death was a result of torture inflicted by the police during his custody. In response to these allegations, five police personnel, including two officers and three special police officers from Manubazar police station, have been detained. A formal case has been registered against them following the family’s complaint, according to Sabroom SDPO Nityananda Sarkar.
The post-mortem examination of Badal Tripura’s body will be carried out by a team of doctors, under the supervision of an executive magistrate, to ensure transparency in the investigation.
Protests and Road Blockade
The incident has triggered significant unrest in the region. Angry locals gathered outside the Manubazar police station, staging demonstrations and demanding exemplary punishment for the police personnel accused of torture. The protesters also set up a road blockade on the Agartala-Sabroom national highway at Manubazar, disrupting traffic in the area.
Authorities have increased security around the Manubazar police station to prevent further escalation of the situation and ensure the safety of the police personnel and public.
Call for Justice
The death of Badal Tripura has ignited widespread condemnation and raised serious concerns about custodial practices and human rights in the region. The incident is likely to further fuel debates over police conduct and the need for accountability in custodial cases.
As the investigation continues, the local community and the victim’s family are urging the authorities for a thorough inquiry and swift action against those responsible for Badal’s death. The findings of the post-mortem examination will be crucial in determining the cause of death and the next steps in the legal proceedings.
