In a first admission of irregularity in the conduct of the NEET undergraduate exam this year, Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan acknowledged that there have been “some errors limited to specific regions”, referring to Bihar’s investigation into allegations of paper leak, and announced the setting up of a high-level committee to fix responsibility within the NTA and review its structure and functioning.

Pradhan, who was the Chief Guest for the International Yoga Day event, which was scheduled to begin at 6.00  am today, could not attend it due to “some urgent work”, Delhi University (DU) officials said.

The cancellation of UGC-NET came amid ongoing controversy over alleged irregularities in the medical entrance exam – NEET. Both exams are conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). The police in Bihar and Gujarat are investigating the alleged leak of the NEET-UG 2024 question paper.

The same day Bihar’s deputy chief minister Vijay Kumar Sinha claimed the arrested prime accused in the NEET “paper leak” is linked to officials associated with RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav.

Unease in the BJP and other RSS affiliates, including ABVP

The controversies surrounding the UGC-NET and NEET-UG, the two important national level examinations, have also led to unease in the BJP and other RSS affiliates, including ABVP.

ABVP national general secretary Yagywalkya Shukla has raised questions over the credibility of NTA. “There is a perception of mismanagement by NTA. How is it that question papers are reaching 15-20 minutes late in certain centres? How is it that 7-8 students from the same centre get 100% marks? How did 67 students get 720 marks? There is a question mark on NTA’s credibility. When people ask questions, the government must answer,” Shukla told.

INDI alliance demands cancellation of NEET exam

The controversies surrounding the UGC-NET and NEET-UG, the two important national-level examinations, have triggered a political row with opposition leaders including Rahul Gandhi launching a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi accusing him of being more concerned about Lok Sabha Speaker’s election scheduled next week.

RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav said that the INDI Alliance is united on this issue. INDI Alliance want the NEET exam to be immediately cancelled. He said that the BJP government have all the investigation agencies, they can call the his PS or PA anyone for probe. He blamed that BJP wanted to divert the issue from the kingpin, the engineer who is talked about could be a beneficiary but Amit Anand is  the masterminds of the paper leak who has the relations with Deputy CM Samrat Chaudhary.

Supreme Court hearing on July 8

The NEET-UG 2024 issue has even reached the Supreme Court. The next hearing in the alleged anomalies while conducting the exam is on July 8.

Supreme Court once again declined to stay the process of NEET-UG 2024 counselling. The apex court has issued a notice to the National Testing Agency (NTA). The top court tagged the fresh pleas along with pending petitions and posted them for hearing on July 8.
