‘Jai Shri Ram’ echo in Parliament as new MPs take oath in several languages
The first session of the 18th Lok Sabha has begun today. Before the beginning of the session, senior member of the House Bhartruhari Mahtab, who was appointed to the post of Protem Speaker, was sworn in by President Draupadi Murmu at the Rashtrapati Bhavan..
Today 280 MPs will take oath in alphabetical order of States.
With the beginning of the Parliament session, the Protem Speaker first administered the oath of a member of the House to Prime Minister Modi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi took his oath in Hindi amid slogans of “Jai Shri Ram” from the treasury benches. After that, Union ministers and other members were sworn in.
The first session of Modi Government 3.0 in Parliament is expected to be quite uproarious. The Lok Sabha witnessed a display of linguistic diversity on Monday 24th June 2024, with the newly-elected MPs taking their oaths in English and Indian languages, including Sanskrit, Hindi, Dogri, Bengali, Assamese and Odia.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, Women and Child Development Minister Annapurna Devi, Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia and Urban Development Minister Manohar Lal Khattar were among those who took oath in Hindi.
Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, the MP from Odisha’s Sambalpur, took oath in Odia. As Pradhan proceeded to take his oath, members of the opposition raised “NEET, NEET” slogans, amid a controversy over alleged irregularities in competitive exams, including the medical entrance exam National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET-UG).
Suresh Gopi, the first BJP MP to be elected from Kerala’s Thrissur constituency, also took oath as a member of the 18th Lok Sabha. Before taking his oath in Malayalam, the actor-politician invoked the gods, saying “Krishna, Guruvayurappa”. Gopi is the Minister of State (MoS) for Tourism and Petroleum.
Shripad Yesso Naik, the MoS for Power and Renewable Energy, took his oath in Sanskrit. Naik won a sixth term from the North Goa constituency.
Union Minister Jitender Singh, the MP from Jammu and Kashmir’s Udhampur, took his oath in Dogri.
Union Minister of Port and Shipping Sarbananda Sonowal and Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu took their oaths in Assamese and Telugu, respectively.
Sonowal is the MP from Assam’s Dibrugarh while Naidu is a three-time MP from Andhra Pradesh’s Srikakulam constituency. He is also the youngest minister in the third Modi government.
Steel and Heavy Industries Minister HD Kumaraswamy and Consumer Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi took their oaths in Kannada while Coal and Mines Minister G Kishan Reddy took his oath in Telugu.
Earlier in the day, Bhartruhari Mahtab took oath as a member of the new Lower House as well pro-tem speaker
Before the proceedings started, all members stood in silence for a few seconds to mark the solemn occasion of the first sitting of the new House.
There was the happiness of the opposition on the first day of Lok Sabha. All the SP MPs were seen wearing red caps and saliva coloured gamchhas. The women MPs of SP wore gamchhas but did not wear red caps. In the Lok Sabha elections, the Samajwadi Party has won 37 seats in Uttar Pradesh.
The INDI Alliance has already made preparations for corner the government on many issues ranging from NEET. This session of Parliament will run till July 3.
Rahul Gandhi has attacked the NDA government today. The Congress MP said press brief that many shortcomings have been seen in the first 15 days of the NDA government and this is why PM Modi is on the back foot and is busy saving his government.
Rahul Gandhi said that there are 10 reasons due to which Narendra Modi’s government is on the back foot. These include horrific train accidents, terrorist attacks in Kashmir, plight of passengers in trains, NEET scam, NEET PG cancellation, UGC NET paper leak, milk, pulses, gas, toll becoming more expensive, forests burning due to fire, water crisis and deaths due to lack of arrangements during heat wave.
