New Delhi, June 21, 2024 — The Delhi High Court on Friday stayed the release of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on bail after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) challenged the trial court’s bail order related to the Delhi excise policy case.
Background of the Case
A Delhi court on Thursday had granted bail to Kejriwal in the liquor policy scam case on a bail bond of ₹1 lakh. Kejriwal, who was arrested by the ED on March 21, had been released on bail to campaign during the Lok Sabha elections. Following the conclusion of the elections, he surrendered on June 2, a day after the polling for the final phase.
Currently, Kejriwal is lodged in Tihar Jail.
The Enforcement Directorate moved the High Court against the Rouse Avenue Court’s order. According to Bar & Bench, the ED’s plea was presented before a vacation bench comprising Justices Sudhir Kumar Jain and Ravinder Dudeja. In its plea, the ED sought an urgent stay on Kejriwal’s release, arguing that the lower court had issued its bail order at 8 PM without allowing the ED sufficient opportunity to oppose the bail.
High Court’s Ruling
The Delhi High Court directed a stay on the bail order until the matter is heard in detail. The court has scheduled the hearing for today to further deliberate on the case.
The ED’s move to challenge the bail underscores the significant legal battles surrounding the Delhi excise policy case, which has drawn substantial attention. The central agency’s insistence on an urgent stay reflects the complexities and high stakes involved in this matter.
This development is a critical juncture in the ongoing investigation into the alleged irregularities in the Delhi excise policy. It underscores the judiciary’s role in balancing legal procedures and ensuring that all parties have adequate opportunities to present their cases.
Ongoing Updates
As the High Court hears the matter today, further updates are expected. This case continues to be a focal point in Delhi’s political and legal landscape, with significant implications for both the Aam Aadmi Party and the ongoing governance in the capital.
