Changes in GST Rates: What’s Cheaper and What’s Dearer

Railway Services

The GST Council has exempted several railway services from GST, including platform tickets, waiting rooms, cloakrooms, battery-operated car services, and intra-railway transactions. This exemption aims to make railway services more affordable for the general public.

Hostel Accommodation

Accommodation facilities provided at hostels, primarily for students, will be exempt from GST if the cost is up to ₹20,000 per person monthly and the service is provided for a minimum continuous period of 90 days. This exemption is designed to support students seeking affordable housing options.

Carton Boxes

A uniform GST rate of 12 percent has been recommended for all carton boxes and cases made of both corrugated and non-corrugated paper or paperboard. This measure is expected to benefit apple growers in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir by reducing packaging costs.

Milk Cans

All milk cans, irrespective of whether they are made of steel, iron, or aluminum, will now attract a 12 percent GST. This uniform rate aims to streamline tax compliance for dairy farmers and milk distributors.

Solar Cookers

The GST Council has decided on a uniform GST rate of 12 percent for all solar cookers, whether they operate on a single or dual energy source. This move is intended to promote the use of renewable energy sources and encourage sustainable cooking practices.

Sprinklers

A uniform GST rate of 12 percent will be applied to all types of sprinklers, including fire and water sprinklers. This is expected to standardize the tax structure for these essential safety and irrigation devices.
