Mumbai, June 11, 2024 — Over 50 hospitals and a college in Mumbai were hit by bomb threats via email on Tuesday, causing widespread alarm and immediate police action. The hospitals targeted included Jaslok Hospital, Raheja Hospital, Seven Hills Hospital, Kohinoor Hospital, KEM Hospital, JJ Hospital, and St. George Hospital, along with Hinduja College of Commerce in Girgaon.
Details of the Threat
Nature of Threats: The emails claimed bombs were planted under beds and in bathrooms within the hospitals, posing a significant danger of explosion.
Source and Method: The emails were sent through a VPN network, specifically from the website Beeble.com. Each email was individually crafted and sent to more than 50 hospitals.
Immediate Response: Upon receiving the threats, the hospitals promptly informed the police. Police and bomb disposal squads conducted thorough searches but found no suspicious objects.
Investigation
Current Status: The sender of the emails remains unidentified, and the motive behind the threats is still unclear.
Similar Incidents: Earlier in the day, Hinduja College received a similar threat, which also turned out to be a hoax after police investigation.
Wider Context: The threats to Mumbai hospitals and the college followed similar bomb threats received by 41 airports across India, including those in Chennai, Patna, and Jaipur. All these threats were also found to be hoaxes.
However, the threat mails sent to all airports, including Chennai, Patna and Jaipur, were found to be a hoax.
The airports in Chennai, Patna, Nagpur, Jaipur, Vadodara, Coimbatore and Jabalpur were among those that received the email threats.
The emails received by the airports carried almost the identical message: “Hello, there are explosives hidden in the Airport. The bombs will soon explode. You will all die.”
Official Statements
An official from Mumbai’s VP Road police station stated, “Local police and bomb squad reached the spot and started an investigation but nothing suspicious was found.”
The threats have caused significant disruption, prompting authorities to implement contingency measures and conduct exhaustive security checks to ensure public safety.
