Hathras, Uttar Pradesh, July 2, 2024: At least 116 people lost their lives in a tragic stampede during a religious event organized by self-styled guru Bhole Baba, also known as Narayan Saakar Hari. Bhole Baba, who claims connections with the Intelligence Bureau, reportedly turned to spirituality during his professional career, resigning in the 1990s to fully pursue his spiritual path.
Background of Bhole Baba
Bhole Baba, born Suraj Pal in Bahadur Nagari village, Etah district, Uttar Pradesh, was the son of a farmer, Nanne Lal, and Katori Devi. He had two brothers, one of whom is deceased. After completing his initial education in his village, he worked as a head constable with the Local Intelligence Unit of the UP police. Pal claimed that he began working with the Intelligence Bureau after college and his spiritual inclination developed during his tenure there.
In 1999, Suraj Pal left his police job and adopted the name Narayan Saakar Hari. Unlike many other spiritual leaders, Narayan Hari does not wear saffron robes but prefers a white suit and tie or a kurta-pyjama. During his sermons, he claims not to keep any donations, using them instead to support his devotees. His wife, Prem Bati, often accompanies him at these events. Narayan Hari identifies himself as a disciple of Hari and has amassed a sizeable following in western Uttar Pradesh.
Local residents are blaming the administration and police for the stampede at the event, which took place at Ram Kutir Charitable Trust in Mainpuri district. Reports indicate that only one doctor was available at Hathras Trauma Centre, with no oxygen cylinders on hand. Over 100 people have lost their lives due to the stampede.
