World Environment Day is celebrated every year on 5th June. It is a global platform for raising awareness and taking action on pressing environmental issues such as global warming, over population, marine life and sustainable consumption of resources.

World Environment Day was established in 1972 by the United Nations at the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment (5–16 June 1972), that had resulted from discussions on the integration of human interactions and the environment. One year later, in 1973, the first WED was held with the theme “Only One Earth”. Since then it is being celebrated throughout the world with a specific theme. For almost five decades, World Environment Day has been raising awareness, supporting action, and driving changes for the environment. Here is a timeline of key accomplishments in WEDs’ history. The theme for 2025 will be Ending plastic pollution.

In CBSE schools in Delhi, the day is celebrated today  in online mode under mission Life Style For Environment (LiFE).

In a circular sent by CBSE to its school Principals  CBSE has urged the schools to nudge individuals and communities to practice a lifestyle that is synchronous with nature and does not harm it. Mission LiFE is an India-led global mass movement to prod individual and community action to protect and preserve the environment. It aims to mobilize a large number of people to actively take part in the campaign and encourages individuals to adopt lifestyles that are beneficial for both personal well-being and the environment. It creates awareness about the importance of conservation, moderation and sustainable practices.
