Bharatiya Janta Party has called its newly elected MPs, state unit chiefs and Chief Ministers to New Delhi for a meeting at 11.00 am today, 7th June 2024. Presidents of all NDA partners and MPs are also expected to meet today formally to elect Narendra Modi as the coalition’s leader before he heads to Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Narendra Modi, along with NDA leaders including TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu, Bihar Chief Minister and JDU leader Nitish Kumar, LJP Chief Chirag Paswan is expected to meet President Droupadi Murmu today to formally stake claim for paving the way for him to take oath as Prime Minister for a third term. It is expected that Modi cabinet will take place oath on Saturday, 9th June at 6.00 pm.
On Thursday, there were hectic meetings among BJP leaders to finalise details on government formation. Sources said the meeting at party chief J P Nadda’s residence was attended by Sangh leaders including Arun Kumar, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and BJP national general secretary (organisation) B. L.Santhosh.
The leaders, sources said, met to “exchange notes, take perceptions from each other and share the impact of the electoral outcome”. The BJP leadership also discussed to work out a formula for Cabinet formation including issues such as allocation of ministerial berths among allies, party functionaries said.
As the Narendra Modi-led government prepares to take oath on 9th June 2024, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has devised a formula to share power with its allies. BJP’s strategy is based on the “4:1” formula and to retain big ministries like Home, Finance, Defence, and External Affairs, while its allies will be given Minister of State (MoS) posts in these ministries.
Sources said that the JDU has demanded key ministries like Railways, Agriculture, and Finance, while the TDP has asked for the Lok Sabha speaker’s post and two additional ministries. However, under the BJP’s formula, the JDU is likely to get three cabinet ministers and one or two MoS posts, while the TDP may get two cabinet ministers and one MoS post.
JDU reportedly wants about four to five Cabinet berths and two minister of state (MoS) posts.
The formula is based on a simple ratio: for every four MPs, a party will get one cabinet minister. This means that if the TDP has 16 MPs, it will likely get four cabinet ministers, while the JDU with 12 MPs may get three cabinet ministers.
The Shiv Sena-Shinde faction with seven MPs may get two cabinet minister posts, while the LJP-Ram Vilas faction with five MPs may get one cabinet minister and one MoS post.
The BJP’s allies are expected to make further demands as they negotiate their role in the new government.
