An under-construction small bridge collapsed in East Champaran district on Sunday, marking the third such incident in Bihar within a week, officials said. The collapse occurred in Ghorasahan block in Motihari. Significantly, no casualties were reported.
Significantly, the 16-meter-long bridge, is being built by the state’s Rural Works Department (RWD) over a canal, and is intended to connect Amwa village to other areas of the block. The project had a budget of Rs 1.5 crore.
Exact cause behind collapse remain unidentified
Meanwhile, speaking of the incident, Dipak Kumar Singh, Additional Chief Secretary of RWD said, “The exact cause of the incident is not yet known. It is a serious matter and a departmental inquiry has been ordered. Strict action will be taken against those found guilty.
“The district administration has already dispatched its senior officials. They have reached the spot,” Singh added
Further, District Magistrate Saurabh Jorwal also confirmed that the cause of the collapse is being investigated. “There are reports that some locals initially objected to the construction of certain pillars. Police are also looking into this matter,” he added.
“We have reports that a section of locals initially objected to the construction of some pillars of the bridge. Police are also looking into this matter,” the DM stated.
The ₹1.5-crore and 16-metre-long structure would have connected Amwa village in the Ghorasahan block to other areas of the block. It was being constructed over a canal by the state government’s RWD.
Previous bridge collapses in Bihar under scrutiny
This incident follows two similar occurrences in Bihar. On Saturday, a newly constructed bridge, also built over a canal, came crashing down in the Siwan district. It connected the villages of Daraunda and Maharajganj blocks.
The bridge, believed to have been built in 1991, was funded by then Maharajganj MLA Uma Shankar Singh’s local area development fund.
Before that, a 183-meter-long bridge connecting the Sikti and Kursakanta blocks of Araria district collapsed on Tuesday. The bridge was being built over the river Bakra at a cost of ₹12 crore.
